Maximize Your Brand Using Your URL [Fun with URLs Part 2 of 3]

Redirect Links are Pretty and Popular.  They are Pretty Popular!

I don’t really know what to call them.  Vanity Links or Pretty Links or Custom Redirects.  Since I can’t define them by their name let me define them by their purpose.

Going right along with Fun with URLs Part 1 we are talking about using your URL to make short and easy links back to, or even just through, your website domain.  The more we can give out our own URL instead of Facebook’s the better!  If you’re like me and have a lot of content out there on the web you will see why this is valuable.  The normal business these days is on no less than 10-15 different websites I would guess.  Most likely it’s social sites and/or advertising sites.

In the case of a car dealership I would say you can be found on sites like;  Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Youtube, LinkedIn, Foursquare, Yelp, Google+, Google Maps, Craigslist, eBay, Backpage, CarsForSale, AutoTrader,, DealerRater, BBB…like I said, 10-15+.

Now Here’s the Question…

We always hear about the the importance of the “Elevator Pitch“.  Well after that pitch what would be your call to action?  Where do you send them online?  What URL do you give them?  Right now your answer would be “Just go to and search me”.  That’s fine but why not brand yourself a little better?  Why not give them an easy to remember fail proof URL to connect with you.  The World Wide Web is full of distrations.  You tell them to go to LinkedIn to find you and they’ll be on YouTube watching April Fools pranks for 30 minutes and wonder how they ended up there!  [SQUIRREL!]

Be intentional about your calls to action and maximize your brand awareness!

The uses are limitless (and fun to come up with)!

The point is send people to your domain.  Brand yourself.  Build awareness.  Oh, and in doing so track the traffic!  Did I forget to mention that?  When you use links such as the ones above you can see how many clickthroughs were generated.

I can hear you now, “now you’re talking, Matt!”

Track your Traffic

That’s right.  In using these vanity links you can start tracking stats.  Here are some examples:

E-Mail Signature
Lets say you have a link to your Facebook page in your signature line of your emails.  Swap it out and make it a vanity one so you can see how many are actually clicking it.

A/B Testing
Create two links to the same page and market them different.  Maybe one is a CPC campaign and one is an E-mail Campaign.  See what’s working better.

Direct Marketing
Send someone a link in an email specific to only them so you can see if they actually click on it.  Sneaky right?

Ready to Get Started?  How do I do this?

The most popular means of creating these links is through a Worpress Plugin called Pretty Link.  If your website is not a WordPress site you will need to contact your Webmaster to see about creating these type of URLs.  For dealers of mine (Dealer Solutions Software and/or SEO Car Website users) you have it built in to the backend of your website!  This is a new feature we just created and few weeks ago.  If you need help getting started contact us directly or leave a comment below.
